Greensboro, North Carolina – Damaging wind gusts and large hail could hit the Greensboro area Saturday afternoon as a Level 2 severe weather risk moves into the western Piedmont, according to the National Weather Service in Raleigh.

Saturday’s storms are expected to develop between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., with the highest threat window centered on late afternoon into early evening. The NWS upgraded the outlook Friday afternoon, placing cities like Greensboro, Asheboro, and Wadesboro under a Slight Risk (Level 2 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms. Wind gusts could exceed 60 mph, and isolated flash flooding is also possible.

Chapel Hill, Sanford, and Pinehurst remain under a lower Level 1/Marginal Risk, though brief heavy downpours and small hail may still occur. Areas east of Raleigh, including Rocky Mount and Goldsboro, are expected to see more scattered storms with reduced intensity.

Residents in affected areas should secure loose outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during storm hours, and keep mobile devices charged in case of outages. Drivers should watch for downed trees and ponding on roads during evening commutes.

Severe weather risks are expected to taper off after midnight. Additional alerts may be issued Saturday morning as storm timing and track become clearer.
