Grand Rapids, Michigan – Outdoor burning and grilling could turn dangerous today across southwest Michigan as gusty winds and dry air raise fire concerns. Gusts up to 35 mph and humidity levels below 30% are prompting red flag conditions across areas like Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Muskegon.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, residents should avoid open flames, grilling, or using tools that may spark until winds calm overnight. The elevated fire risk spans from Mason and Oceana counties south through Allegan, Barry, and Van Buren, reaching as far east as Jackson County. Fire crews across Kent and Ottawa counties remain on alert.

Late tonight into early Thursday, isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop near the lakeshore, especially west of U.S. Route 131. Gusty winds and lightning are possible with stronger cells.

What to Do:

  • Postpone campfires and outdoor burning
  • Use extreme caution with grills and power tools
  • Secure outdoor items that may blow away in strong winds

The unsettled weather continues through early next week, with storm chances reappearing Friday and Sunday into Monday.
