Grand Rapids, MI – A powerful windstorm swept through West Michigan Wednesday night into Thursday, bringing gusts up to 74 mph. The storm caused power outages, downed trees, and travel disruptions across the region.
The highest wind speed, 74 mph, was recorded at South Haven Regional Airport. Other significant gusts included 67 mph at Saugatuck Pier and 65 mph near Grand Haven Lighthouse. According to the National Weather Service, these winds resulted from a fast-moving winter storm that intensified along the Great Lakes.
Residents reported scattered property damage, including roofing issues and fallen branches. Power outages affected thousands, especially in coastal areas. Crews are working to restore service and clear debris from roads.
The storm also caused hazardous driving conditions, with reports of jackknifed trucks along I-94 near Van Buren County. Officials are urging caution as cleanup continues and winds gradually diminish.
West Michigan residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and stay informed about future weather alerts.
