Grand Junction, Colo. – Dangerously dry heat and gusty winds are heightening wildfire risks across western Colorado and eastern Utah this week, with fire weather concerns expected to peak by Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, isolated dry thunderstorms may flare up each afternoon through Wednesday, particularly over higher terrain from the Elk Mountains to the La Sal Range. Gusty winds and low humidity will combine to create conditions favorable for fire starts and rapid spread.

Cities like Grand Junction, Montrose, and Moab will see daily highs in the upper 90s, with Thursday expected to top out near 97°F. Winds will shift directions but remain persistent, especially in the afternoons when fire danger peaks. While brief storms may develop, most areas will remain dry—delivering wind and lightning without meaningful rain.

Residents in Mesa, Garfield, and San Juan counties should avoid outdoor burning, secure fire-prone materials, and monitor air quality as haze or smoke could increase later in the week. Emergency officials advise keeping mobile alerts on and having evacuation plans ready in case of sudden flare-ups.

Fire weather concerns remain elevated through Saturday, and additional Red Flag Warnings may be issued if wind speeds increase further.
