Grand Forks, North Dakota – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect across parts of eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota as light snow and gusty winds combine to create reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Grand Forks reports widespread snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches across much of the Red River Valley, with locally higher totals possible in a few areas. Snow is expected to develop late Saturday afternoon, continuing overnight and lingering into Sunday afternoon.

While snowfall amounts are relatively modest, blowing snow is the primary concern. Winds are forecast to increase overnight, becoming northwest by Sunday morning, which may lead to periods of low visibility and occasional whiteout conditions, particularly in open country and unsheltered areas.

Forecasters note that the worst blowing snow impacts are expected Sunday morning, when reduced visibility could make travel dangerous. Roads most likely to be affected include Interstate 29, Interstate 94, US-2, US-75, and surrounding rural highways.

According to the National Weather Service, travel may be difficult at times, with longer travel times and rapidly changing road conditions possible. Even brief whiteouts can significantly reduce driver reaction time.

Motorists are urged to slow down, use headlights, and be prepared for sudden drops in visibility. Those traveling Sunday morning should consider delaying trips if possible, especially across rural stretches where wind exposure is greatest.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve Sunday afternoon as winds ease and snow tapers off. No significant additional snowfall is expected after the system exits the region.

These impacts may be especially challenging for weekend travelers, truck drivers, and commuters using open highways across the Red River Valley.
