Grand Canyon Village, Ariz. – Daytime temperatures could soar as high as 110°F in the Grand Canyon’s lower elevations this weekend, prompting an Extreme Heat Warning for areas below 4,000 feet from 10 a.m. Saturday to 7 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, dangerously hot conditions will affect locations like Phantom Ranch and Havasupai Gardens, where prolonged outdoor exposure could lead to heat-related illnesses without adequate hydration and cooling.

Park officials advise day hikers to avoid descending more than 1.5 miles from the upper Bright Angel Trailhead and to plan all canyon activity outside the peak heat window of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors should wear wide-brimmed hats, apply sunscreen frequently, and carry plenty of water with added electrolytes. Extra calories, salty snacks, and shaded rest stops are also recommended.

The warning is one of the most serious issued each year, reserved for extreme conditions that pose a significant threat to hikers, campers, and backcountry travelers.

Heat alerts could be extended if temperatures remain high into Monday. Visitors are urged to monitor park advisories and limit strenuous activity during peak hours.
