Atlanta, GA – A significant winter storm is sweeping across Georgia, bringing heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain to much of the state. The National Weather Service reports that the storm began early Friday and will continue through Saturday morning.

According to the latest forecast, north and central Georgia are expected to see snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches, with up to 3 inches in the mountains. Ice accumulation is a major concern, with amounts ranging from one-tenth to four-tenths of an inch. This combination of snow and ice is creating treacherous conditions across roads and highways, particularly bridges and overpasses.

The hazardous weather is likely to cause widespread power outages as ice weighs down power lines and tree limbs. Officials have urged residents to delay all non-essential travel. Those who must drive are advised to carry an emergency kit, including a flashlight, food, and water.

Power companies are on alert, with crews prepared to address outages throughout the storm. However, the extent of ice damage may result in prolonged restoration efforts.

Meteorologists warn that conditions will impact both morning and evening commutes on Friday. Travelers should use extreme caution, as icy surfaces will make roads nearly impassable in some areas. The storm is expected to taper off by 7 a.m. on Saturday.
