Columbia, SC – A significant winter storm is expected to impact central South Carolina and east-central Georgia starting Friday morning. Residents should prepare for slippery roads and hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, the Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 7 a.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Saturday. The storm will bring up to half an inch of snow and sleet, with ice accumulations reaching 0.2 inches. These conditions could severely impact morning and evening commutes, making travel dangerous across the region.
Affected areas include Lexington, Richland, Aiken, Sumter, and Orangeburg counties in South Carolina, as well as Columbia and Richmond counties in Georgia. Cities such as Augusta, Lexington, and Columbia should expect icy conditions on sidewalks, bridges, and roads.
The advisory also extends to southeastern Orangeburg, Barnwell, and Bamberg counties, where a light glaze of ice is forecast. Power outages may occur in these areas as ice accumulates on power lines and tree limbs.
The National Weather Service advises residents to reduce travel if possible. If driving is necessary, motorists should slow down, maintain a safe distance, and prepare for sudden stops.
Residents are urged to monitor updates on road conditions by calling 511 or visiting their state’s Department of Transportation website. Preparations should include emergency supplies such as flashlights, blankets, and a fully charged phone.
Winter storm impacts are expected to taper off early Saturday morning, though residual ice may persist in shaded areas.
