ATLANTA, Georgia – With Thanksgiving travel just weeks away, Georgia transportation officials are reminding drivers to prepare vehicles now for winter travel safety. From Atlanta to Savannah, state leaders are urging motorists to take advantage of mild early November weather to complete seasonal maintenance before colder air and heavy holiday traffic arrive.
According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, drivers should begin winter preparation by checking tires, topping off antifreeze, replacing wipers, and testing batteries. Officials also recommend packing a vehicle emergency kit that includes a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, bottled water, snacks, and traction aids such as sand or kitty litter.
Motorists traveling on I-75, I-85, and I-16 during Thanksgiving week should be ready for congestion and variable weather, especially when driving between the mountains and coastal regions. “Even in the South, black ice and frost can surprise drivers,” a GDOT spokesperson said. “A little preparation now can make all the difference during busy holiday travel.” Drivers are advised to keep gas tanks at least half full, carry warm clothing, and make sure phones are charged before long trips.
The state encourages travelers to use 511GA.org for real-time road, plow, and traffic updates throughout the winter months. Officials stress that getting vehicles ready now will help ensure safe, smooth Thanksgiving travel and reliable driving as Georgia transitions into the winter season.
