Atlanta, Georgia – Downpours and dangerous lightning could roll into metro Atlanta by midday Thursday, disrupting commutes and outdoor plans across the region.

According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are likely to begin after 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 12. Some storms may produce heavy rainfall and localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and along major roads such as I-285 and I-20. Rain chances peak Thursday afternoon, then taper slightly before increasing again Thursday night.

Drivers should allow extra travel time and avoid flood-prone intersections. Winds will remain light, but storms could bring brief gusts and reduced visibility. The high temperature will hover around 86°F before rain-cooled air moves in.

Storms will remain possible each day through Sunday. Friday and Saturday both bring a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms — mainly in the afternoon and evening hours. Some weekend storms may again produce heavy rainfall and minor flooding, with temperatures staying in the mid to upper 80s.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, especially when planning events or travel from Thursday into the weekend. Keep phones charged, avoid driving through standing water, and prepare for multiple rounds of afternoon storms.
