Atlanta, GA – A high fire danger warning has been issued for parts of central and east Georgia as dry conditions and low humidity create an increased risk of wildfires Wednesday afternoon into the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, relative humidity levels will drop to 25% or lower for four or more hours. Combined with southwest winds of 6 to 12 mph and rapidly drying fuels, this poses a heightened fire threat.
Authorities urge residents to check with local burn permitting offices before conducting any outdoor burns. Even recent rainfall has not been sufficient to mitigate the risk, as conditions have dried out quickly. If burning is necessary, officials advise taking extreme precautions to prevent unintentional fires.
The warning affects multiple counties, including Banks, Jackson, Clarke, Fayette, Bibb, Houston, and Baldwin. Fire officials stress the importance of properly extinguishing cigarettes, avoiding open flames in grassy areas, and keeping a water source nearby when using fire outdoors.
Residents should remain aware of local fire restrictions and monitor updates from weather and emergency services. If conditions persist, additional fire safety measures may be enacted across the state.
