Elberton, Ga. – An EF-1 tornado with winds up to 105 mph tore through Bobby Brown State Park in Elbert County Monday evening, downing trees and scraping a path nearly a mile long near the Savannah River.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, the tornado touched down at 7:10 p.m. EDT on June 9, snapping and uprooting dozens of trees as it moved east toward the South Carolina state line. The brief twister carved a 0.96-mile track about 200 yards wide. No injuries or deaths were reported.

Damage was concentrated in the park and nearby wooded areas. Crews reported tree damage visible from Mallorysville Lisbon Road, and some downed limbs were observed across the river in McCormick County, South Carolina. While the tornado missed populated neighborhoods in Elberton, power crews and park rangers spent much of Tuesday clearing debris from trails and access roads.

Officials urge residents in the Elbert and McCormick areas to remain weather-aware as June storms continue across the Southeast. While no additional tornadoes are expected in the short term, more pop-up storms remain possible through midweek.
