Atlanta, Georgia – Storm-weary Georgians should brace for another round of severe thunderstorms sweeping across central and northern parts of the state Sunday, with strong winds, heavy downpours, and possible localized flooding likely to disrupt weekend plans.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, strong storms will develop before 3 p.m. Sunday, especially around Atlanta, Macon, and Athens. Some storms may bring damaging wind gusts up to 30 mph and produce over a half-inch of rainfall in under an hour. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains possible through early Sunday evening for portions of north and central Georgia, including along heavily traveled I-75.
By Sunday night, showers and storms will taper off, but more rain is expected to return by midweek. Daily chances for storms remain elevated through at least Thursday, increasing the risk of waterlogged soil and flash flooding in low-lying areas.
