Atlanta, Georgia – Damaging winds and strong thunderstorms will sweep southeast along the I-85 corridor Thursday, with gusts reaching 60 mph in parts of north and central Georgia.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, the greatest threat for severe storms runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. north of I-85—including metro Atlanta and Gainesville—and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. south of I-85, affecting cities like Macon, Columbus, and LaGrange. The primary risk includes damaging wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph, with isolated large hail possible.

Drivers along I-85 should expect reduced visibility, downed limbs, and possible power outages. Local emergency managers urge residents to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and keep mobile devices charged in case of outages.

In areas such as Newnan, Athens, and Augusta, scattered storms could cause brief disruptions to afternoon commutes and outdoor events. No tornado threat is currently forecast, but conditions may evolve.

The line of storms is expected to exit the state by early evening. Further alerts or watches may be issued throughout the day.
