Rome, Ga. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to sweep across northwest Georgia Friday evening, bringing the threat of damaging winds and large hail to more than a dozen counties through 11 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect for 13 Georgia counties, including Bartow, Floyd, Cherokee, and Whitfield. The watch, issued at 5:35 p.m. EDT, warns of possible wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail as large as quarters.

Communities along the I-75 corridor—from Cartersville to Dalton—should remain alert through the evening. Power outages and falling tree limbs are possible, especially in rural areas like Fannin, Pickens, and Gilmer counties. Local emergency officials urge residents to secure outdoor items and stay indoors if storms approach.

Drivers are advised to avoid travel during downpours and never attempt to cross flooded roadways. The storms could impact high school sports events and evening commutes, particularly in towns like Rome and Calhoun.

Storm chances may diminish after 11 p.m., but updates could extend warnings or expand coverage. Residents are encouraged to monitor local alerts and have weather radios or smartphone notifications enabled.
