Valdosta, GA – A flash flood emergency remains in effect for Valdosta and surrounding areas as heavy rains continue to inundate south-central Georgia. Parts of the region have received over 10 inches of rainfall in the past 12 hours, prompting urgent warnings from the National Weather Service (NWS) for residents to stay off flooded roadways and avoid unnecessary travel.
According to the NWS Tallahassee, rainfall rates between 2-3 inches per hour have been recorded, and conditions are expected to remain hazardous as the storm system lingers over the area. Officials are urging residents to avoid roads with standing water, as conditions can quickly worsen, especially after dark when visibility is limited. Key roadways, including portions of I-75 and Highway 84, are at risk of localized flooding, impacting travel and emergency response efforts.
Forecast and Weekend Outlook
Rain is likely to persist through Friday, with more storms possible as the Veterans Day weekend approaches. Friday’s forecast shows a continued chance of showers, with a high around 84°F. While there may be periods of calm on Saturday, scattered thunderstorms could return on Sunday, keeping conditions unpredictable and potentially hazardous.
Preparing for Flood Conditions
Residents are advised to monitor local alerts and prepare for possible evacuations in flood-prone areas. The NWS recommends that individuals “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” when encountering flooded roads, as just a few inches of water can be dangerous. Power outages may occur as saturated soil and high winds increase the risk of downed trees and power lines.
With rain expected to ease by Monday, the five-day forecast anticipates clearer skies and mild temperatures to return next week. Until then, those in south Georgia should remain vigilant, especially when driving or traveling near rivers and low-lying areas.
