Atlanta, GA – Parts of north and north-central Georgia face an increased risk of wildfires this afternoon and evening due to low relative humidity and dry conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a high fire danger alert, urging residents to exercise extreme caution with outdoor burning.

According to the NWS Peachtree City office, relative humidity levels are expected to drop below 25% for four or more hours this afternoon into the evening. Winds from the southwest at 6 to 12 mph, combined with dry vegetation, will create conditions favorable for wildfires to ignite and spread.

Additionally, the NWS Greenville-Spartanburg office has issued a similar warning for northeast Georgia, including Rabun, Habersham, Stephens, and Franklin counties. In these areas, humidity levels could fall as low as 15%, with wind gusts reaching 15 to 20 mph.

Residents are advised to check with local burn permitting authorities before conducting any outdoor burning. If burning is permitted, extreme caution should be exercised to prevent fires from getting out of control.

The fire danger is expected to persist until at least 8 p.m. Wednesday. Officials urge the public to report any signs of wildfires immediately and to avoid activities that could spark a fire.
