Peachtree City, GA – A winter weather advisory has been issued for much of Georgia as a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is set to hit the region early Friday morning. Up to one inch of snow and a light glaze of ice are expected in affected areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Peachtree City, the advisory will remain in effect from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. Central, east-central, and west-central Georgia, including cities like Macon, Columbus, and Milledgeville, are under the alert. Hazardous travel conditions are anticipated, especially during the morning commute.
The NWS reports that winter precipitation will begin as snow and sleet during the early morning hours. As temperatures rise, the precipitation will transition to rain by the afternoon. Despite the relatively light accumulation, ice on roadways could make travel dangerous.
Residents are urged to use caution while driving and allow extra time for their morning commutes. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is monitoring conditions and preparing to treat roadways as needed. Travelers can check the latest road conditions by dialing 511.
The winter weather advisory marks the first significant snowfall for Georgia this season. While southern states like Georgia rarely experience heavy snow, even minimal ice or snow can disrupt travel and daily activities. Local officials recommend keeping emergency supplies, such as blankets and non-perishable food, on hand.
The NWS encourages residents to stay updated on changing weather conditions through local news channels and weather apps. More updates are expected as the storm progresses.
