Pendleton, OR – Drivers in Eastern Oregon are facing hazardous travel conditions today as dense freezing fog blankets I-84 and US-97. The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement warning of visibility reduced to under a quarter mile in some areas, particularly on Cabbage Hill near Pendleton.
According to the NWS, the fog is expected to persist throughout Monday morning and return overnight, with freezing temperatures creating slick roadways. Motorists are advised to use low-beam headlights, reduce speed, and maintain a safe following distance when traveling. Patches of ice may develop, particularly on bridges and overpasses.
Tuesday’s forecast shows continued freezing fog through the morning hours, with temperatures hovering around 33°F. Calm winds and overcast skies will dominate the day. The low Tuesday night will dip to 27°F, with patchy freezing fog expected to develop again.
For the rest of the week, Eastern Oregon will experience mostly cloudy conditions, with a slight chance of rain beginning Thursday. Highs will gradually rise, reaching the mid-40s by Friday, but overnight lows will remain near freezing.
Travelers on I-84 and US-97 should remain alert for sudden visibility changes and icy spots, especially during early morning and late evening hours. Officials recommend checking local traffic reports before heading out.
Stay safe by allowing extra travel time and preparing vehicles for winter conditions.
