Huntsville, AL – Residents across the Tennessee Valley are waking up to patchy freezing fog and subfreezing temperatures early Friday. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Huntsville has warned of visibility reductions to less than half a mile in some areas, particularly in sheltered valleys of northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee.

According to the NWS, freezing fog has developed due to temperatures hovering around or below 32°F, increasing the potential for black ice on roads. The affected cities include Huntsville, Florence, Russellville, and Fayetteville. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously, use low-beam headlights, and maintain safe distances from other vehicles.

Conditions are expected to improve after sunrise, with temperatures forecasted to reach a high of 47°F under partly sunny skies. Tonight’s low will drop back to around 30°F, with mostly cloudy skies persisting.

The extended weekend forecast shows a cooler but sunnier pattern, with Saturday’s highs ranging from 40°F to 45°F and overnight lows dipping into the mid-20s. Winds are expected to remain light, with gusts decreasing as the weekend progresses.
