Jacksonville, FL – Residents of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia are bracing for freezing temperatures expected late Saturday night into Sunday morning.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jacksonville issued a Freeze Watch Friday afternoon, warning that temperatures could dip as low as 30 degrees. The affected areas include parts of Suwannee, Baker, Columbia, and Hamilton counties in Florida, along with Coffee, Wayne, and Pierce counties in Georgia.
According to the NWS, the freeze is expected to set in during pre-dawn hours Sunday, potentially damaging crops, plants, and outdoor plumbing. Officials also stress the need to protect vulnerable populations, such as young children, the elderly, and outdoor pets.
Homeowners are urged to insulate outdoor pipes, bring tender plants indoors, and provide shelter for animals. The freeze poses particular risks to those without access to adequate heating, including the homeless.
This cold spell marks an unusual dip in temperatures for the region, which typically averages lows in the mid-40s during December.
Residents should monitor weather updates and prepare now to ensure safety. For more information and updates, visit www.weather.gov/jax.
