Fort Wayne, Ind. –Temperatures across northern Indiana are soaring past the century mark today, with a dangerous heat index topping 103° in several cities and storms threatening by late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. EDT, as the apparent temperature climbs to 102°–103° in Fort Wayne, Huntington, and Marion. Thunderstorms are expected to develop between noon and 10 p.m., with a 30–60% chance of producing damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall.

South Bend and Rochester are forecast to hit a heat index of 101°–102°, while La Porte and Angola remain slightly cooler but still oppressive in the upper 90s. Storms will be scattered, meaning not everyone will experience them, but where they do hit, localized wind damage and flash flooding are possible.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Power outages from falling tree limbs or downed lines are possible during the strongest storms.

Relief arrives Saturday as temperatures drop into the low 80s. Until then, alerts remain in place and could be extended if storm intensity increases.
