Melbourne, Florida – Coin-sized hail and dangerous lightning could strike parts of East Central Florida this evening, as strong storms and heavy rain target areas south and east of I-4, including Port St. Lucie, Melbourne and Vero Beach.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, thunderstorms are expected between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., with a Level 1 (Marginal) risk for both excessive rainfall and severe weather. Up to 3–5 inches of rain could fall in isolated spots near the Treasure Coast, raising the threat of flooding in low-lying areas and ponding on roadways.
Gusty winds between 45–55 mph are likely, with a 5% chance of wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. Cities including Orlando and Kissimmee may also see brief downpours and lightning as storms build along the sea breeze front. Morning rain is expected to clear by 10 a.m., but additional rounds of storms are likely this afternoon and evening.
Residents should avoid driving through flooded streets, charge mobile devices in case of outages, and stay indoors during thunderstorms.
Storm activity is expected to taper off late tonight, but additional alerts may be issued if conditions worsen.
