Orlando, Fla. – East Central Florida faces a dangerous mix of scorching heat and beach hazards today, as heat indices soar above 100°F and moderate rip currents develop along Atlantic beaches from Vero Beach to Daytona.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, Friday’s high temperatures will reach the low to mid-90s across the region, with a heat index between 99°F and 103°F. Scattered afternoon storms may offer brief relief, but forecasters warn that oppressive humidity will amplify heat stress through the evening.
Melbourne, Sanford, and Kissimmee are forecast to top 93°F, while Orlando may feel closer to 103°F during peak hours. At the coast, rip currents will pose a moderate risk to swimmers, with surf heights around 2 feet. Beachgoers are urged to heed lifeguard warnings and avoid swimming alone.
Officials caution residents to stay hydrated, wear light-colored clothing, and avoid leaving people or pets in vehicles. “Heat can escalate quickly,” the NWS warned, especially for children and seniors.
Conditions remain hazardous through Friday night, with additional heat advisories possible over the weekend.
