Tallahassee, FL – Dangerous beach conditions are unfolding along the Florida Panhandle right now, where strong rip currents and rough surf could pull swimmers into deeper water within seconds.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, a high rip current risk is in effect today for Walton County, south-facing Gulf County beaches, and Franklin County. Red flags are flying, signaling life-threatening conditions in the surf zone.
At the same time, a Small Craft Advisory remains in effect through the afternoon, with east winds between 15 and 25 knots and gusts up to 30 knots. Offshore seas are building between 5 and 8 feet, creating hazardous conditions for small boats and inexperienced mariners.
Beaches near Panama City, Apalachicola, and Destin are among the most impacted, where breaking waves and strong currents can quickly overpower even strong swimmers. Officials urge residents and visitors to stay out of the water where warnings are posted.
Boaters should avoid venturing into open waters, and anyone heading to the coast should remain alert to changing conditions. The risk continues through the afternoon, with additional advisories possible if winds and seas remain elevated.
