Tampa, Florida – Strong afternoon thunderstorms will continue to batter parts of west central and southwest Florida through Thursday, with damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and small hail posing safety risks.

According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, the highest rain chances—between 30% and 70%—will target interior sections of the region, especially during peak heating hours in the afternoon and early evening. The storms are expected to redevelop Thursday with similar intensity.

Cities including Lakeland, Arcadia, and Sebring could see downpours that flood low-lying roads and reduce visibility on major routes like I-75 and US 27. Coastal areas may get lighter activity, but a few strong cells could still reach Tampa and Sarasota.

Residents are urged to remain indoors during storms, secure outdoor items, and avoid travel when lightning is present. Power outages are possible where wind gusts or falling limbs impact utility lines.

Storm chances continue into Thursday evening, with another round likely on Friday. Updates will follow as conditions evolve.
