Tallahassee, Florida – Beach conditions along the Florida Panhandle are turning dangerous today, with life-threatening rip currents already impacting swimmers and expected to worsen into Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, a high risk of rip currents is in effect for Gulf-facing beaches in Walton, Bay, Franklin, and Gulf counties. Surf heights between 2 and 3 feet may appear manageable, but strong currents can quickly pull swimmers away from shore.
Popular areas including Panama City Beach, Destin, Apalachicola, and Port St. Joe are all under this elevated risk. Red flags are expected along many beaches, signaling dangerous swimming conditions.
Even experienced swimmers are at risk in these conditions. Officials urge residents and visitors to stay out of the water and follow guidance from local beach patrols. Entering the surf is strongly discouraged while warnings remain in place.
The rip current threat will continue through the weekend, with peak expected Saturday as conditions remain hazardous. Additional advisories may be issued if surf conditions intensify.
