Tallahassee, FL – A powerful cold front is sweeping across the Florida Panhandle, bringing dangerously low temperatures and freeze warnings through Friday morning. Residents are urged to take immediate precautions to protect themselves, pets, and property.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday, with wind chills as low as 12 degrees reported. A Cold Weather Advisory begins Thursday night and continues until 10 a.m. Friday, warning of wind chills dipping to 16 degrees. These conditions pose risks of frostbite, hypothermia, and damage to water pipes.

Experts recommend wearing protective clothing and limiting time outdoors during peak cold hours. Those traveling on major roads, including I-10 and U.S. Highway 231, should watch for black ice and reduced visibility early Friday morning.

Additionally, the extended freeze could cause water pipes to rupture. Residents should wrap or drain outdoor pipes, allow faucets to drip, and ensure sprinkler systems are winterized. The Florida Department of Emergency Management also emphasizes keeping pets indoors and checking on elderly neighbors.

The cold snap is expected to ease by Saturday, with daytime highs climbing back into the 50s. However, nighttime lows will remain in the 30s through the weekend, keeping frost concerns in play.

Stay updated on weather conditions, road closures, and local advisories as the situation develops. Drivers should carry emergency supplies, including blankets and flashlights, in case of unexpected delays.
