Tallahassee, FL – A significant drop in temperatures will impact the Florida Panhandle starting Sunday, bringing sub-freezing wind chills and a rare chance of snow by midweek. Residents are urged to prepare for dangerous cold and potential hazardous driving conditions as Arctic air moves through the region.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, showers and thunderstorms today will transition to dry but bitterly cold conditions by Sunday morning. Overnight lows Sunday and Monday are expected to plummet into the mid-20s, with wind chills making it feel even colder.
The greatest concern lies Tuesday into Wednesday when a wintry mix, including snow and freezing rain, could develop. NWS forecasts indicate a 30-40% chance of snowfall exceeding one inch in areas around Tallahassee and Bainbridge, GA. Freezing rain probabilities also stand between 15-20%, potentially creating slick roadways on major routes like I-10 and U.S. Highway 27.
Drivers are encouraged to monitor road conditions closely and avoid unnecessary travel if freezing precipitation occurs. Cold-sensitive individuals should take precautions to stay warm, and outdoor pets should be brought indoors.
The five-day outlook shows mostly sunny skies returning by Wednesday afternoon, but daytime highs will remain in the low 40s. Tuesday’s wintry mix will give way to freezing overnight lows near 27°F, making frost preparation essential.
