Key West, FL — Residents in the Florida Keys should brace for potentially dangerous conditions as Tropical Storm Rafael nears, bringing threats of strong winds, coastal flooding, and possible power outages. Expected to arrive midday Wednesday, the storm could disrupt local infrastructure and heighten flood risks, especially in low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service Key West, Rafael has a 70% chance of delivering tropical-storm-force winds to Key West, with gusts up to 60 mph. Marathon and Key Largo face similar risks, with the likelihood of damaging wind speeds nearing 55 mph. The tropical storm is also expected to cause coastal flooding, with water levels rising up to two feet above mean high tide, mainly affecting beaches and low-lying shorelines from Wednesday through Thursday.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, prepare for possible power outages, and avoid travel on exposed roads like U.S. Route 1 if conditions worsen. Local officials warn that some roads and causeways may become impassable due to debris and high water levels. Light to moderate flooding on roads could limit access to certain areas in the Lower and Middle Keys.

In addition to strong winds and flooding, Rafael poses a risk for brief tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. Emergency services and local authorities have activated storm protocols, advising residents to monitor official updates and prepare emergency supplies. Heavy rain could add to local challenges, with projections of up to three inches by Thursday.

After Wednesday, the forecast remains unsettled, with stormy conditions likely persisting through Friday. By the weekend, weather in the Florida Keys should improve, with clearer skies expected by Saturday. For real-time updates, residents are encouraged to visit weather.gov/key and hurricanes.gov.
