Sarasota, FL – Beachgoers in Sarasota, Manatee, and Pinellas counties are urged to exercise caution as red tide blooms intensify along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Over the next 36 hours, elevated concentrations of Karenia brevis algae are expected to cause eye irritation and other health risks, particularly for those spending extended time outdoors.

According to NOAA Coastal Ocean Science, toxins released by Karenia brevis can lead to burning, redness, and discomfort in the eyes, especially when winds blow onshore. These effects are amplified during close contact with seawater or prolonged exposure to the coastal air. Popular spots like Siesta Key and Bradenton Beach are likely to experience moderate to high red tide impacts.

To minimize discomfort, health officials recommend wearing sunglasses or protective eyewear when visiting beaches. Those with pre-existing eye sensitivities should avoid the shoreline entirely during peak bloom conditions. Individuals experiencing persistent irritation are encouraged to rinse their eyes with clean water and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.

The red tide is also causing respiratory irritation and may affect marine life. NOAA advises checking local beach conditions and wind forecasts before planning any coastal activities. Winds are expected to shift early next week, which could reduce exposure risks for Thanksgiving travelers.
