Memphis, TN – A significant weather system is bringing dangerous flooding conditions to the Memphis area, with heavy rainfall continuing into the weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a warning for the region, forecasting up to 8 inches of rain through Sunday, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 15 inches.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest rainfall is expected to fall along and north of Interstate 40, where 6 to 8 inches are likely. The area is at risk for “generational flooding,” a term used to describe potentially catastrophic flooding that could disrupt daily life. Historic river flooding is also expected, making travel and outdoor activities hazardous.
Residents are advised to avoid traveling in flooded areas and never drive or walk through water. Multiple rounds of heavy rain are forecast to continue through Sunday morning, and flash flooding could develop rapidly.
Authorities are urging everyone to stay informed through local warnings and have backup ways to receive alerts. The storm’s impact is expected to be widespread across the Mid-South, with the potential for life-threatening conditions in the hardest-hit areas.
