Pittsburgh, Pa. – Heavy rain and thunderstorms could trigger flash flooding across western Pennsylvania today, with the Pittsburgh metro area under a Level 3 flood risk until 10 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service Pittsburgh, a Flood Watch has been issued from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, warning that saturated soil and additional rain may lead to rapid-onset flooding. A large portion of southwest and central Pennsylvania—including Allegheny, Westmoreland, and Indiana counties—faces a Moderate Risk (Level 3) for excessive rainfall.

Communities like Pittsburgh, Monroeville, Greensburg, and Johnstown are especially vulnerable due to recent storms that already soaked the region. Flash flooding could occur quickly in low-lying areas, underpasses, and near small streams.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads, and residents should monitor alerts and charge devices in case of power outages. Emergency management officials stress the importance of being able to receive warnings, particularly in flood-prone zones.

This is the highest flood threat so far this month and similar to rainfall patterns seen during early summer events in 2018.

More updates are expected this evening as storms track east. Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through 10 p.m.
