Washington, DC – Strong winds and low humidity are fueling dangerous fire conditions across the Mid-Atlantic today.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. EDT Wednesday for Northern Virginia, Central Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Eastern West Virginia. Forecasters warn that any fires that ignite may spread rapidly due to northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph, and humidity levels dropping as low as 15%.

The warning includes densely populated areas such as Fairfax, Arlington, Montgomery, Baltimore, and Berkeley County, where fuel moisture has fallen below 10%, increasing ignition potential. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to avoid any activities that could spark flames.

These conditions, although not uncommon during early spring, represent a heightened fire risk for the region. Typically, fire danger in the Mid-Atlantic spikes during dry, windy periods before foliage fully blooms.

Officials recommend securing outdoor equipment, properly disposing of cigarettes, and avoiding the use of grills or fire pits during this alert.
