Northern Indiana, southern Michigan, and southwestern Ohio are under a fire weather alert today as gusty winds and dry conditions elevate the risk of fast-spreading fires. Counties including Fort Wayne, Goshen, and Toledo are at particular risk, with winds gusting up to 25 mph and very low humidity, dropping below 30%. These conditions make it easier for fires to ignite and spread rapidly, especially in areas with dry grass, leaves, or unharvested crops.
The National Weather Service has strongly discouraged outdoor burning and urges residents to avoid any activities involving open flames or equipment that could emit sparks. Many counties across the region already have burn bans in effect, and residents are advised to take precautions by keeping water sources nearby and properly disposing of cigarettes.
Winds are expected to persist through tonight, with conditions improving slightly by Wednesday when cooler temperatures and calmer winds are forecast. However, fire risks will remain high until rain moves into the area later in the week, providing some relief from the dry conditions.
