Pittsburgh, PA – Residents of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia are preparing for a prolonged stretch of dangerously cold temperatures, as an Extreme Cold Watch takes effect late Sunday through Thursday morning. Wind chills are expected to drop as low as -30°F, lasting over 72 hours.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will drop up to 30 degrees below average, with the coldest conditions occurring between Monday and early Wednesday. Wind chills this low can cause frostbite on exposed skin in under 30 minutes and pose significant risks for hypothermia and freezing water pipes.
The advisory affects east-central Ohio, northwest and western Pennsylvania, and northern West Virginia. Elevated areas are expected to experience the most extreme wind chills, particularly overnight and during early morning hours. Officials warn that the prolonged cold could lead to ruptured pipes, adding to concerns amid a nationwide plumber shortage.
Residents are urged to take preventative measures to avoid frozen pipes. Keep cabinet doors under sinks open to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing. Allow faucets to drip slowly, especially those along exterior walls, to prevent pressure buildup in freezing pipes. Wrapping exposed pipes with insulation or heat tape can also reduce the risk of freezing.
Emergency services recommend dressing in layers, keeping pets indoors, and checking on elderly neighbors or family members. Portable heaters should be used safely, and generators or grills should never be operated inside homes due to carbon monoxide risks.
This prolonged period of extreme cold requires preparation to minimize damage and ensure safety. Monitor local weather updates and take proactive measures to safeguard your home and loved ones.
