Houston, TX – The National Weather Service has upgraded a Cold Weather Advisory to an Extreme Cold Warning, effective from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 9 a.m. Wednesday, as wind chills are expected to plummet to as low as 10-15 degrees.

The advisory, currently in place, will remain effective until 6 p.m. Tuesday with wind chills around 22 degrees. Areas impacted include Houston, Galveston, College Station, The Woodlands, and surrounding communities across southeast and south-central Texas.

According to the National Weather Service, prolonged exposure to these conditions increases the risk of hypothermia. Residents are advised to dress in multiple layers, including winter coats, gloves, and hats. Frequent checks on vulnerable neighbors, especially the elderly, are highly encouraged.

Officials also caution against improper use of heating devices. Portable heaters should be used safely, and residents are reminded never to operate grills or generators indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.

These dangerous conditions are expected to ease after 9 a.m. Wednesday, but residents should monitor updates and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this extreme weather event.
