Omaha, NE – An extreme cold warning remains in effect across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa until noon CST Tuesday. Wind chills are expected to plummet as low as -35°F, posing severe frostbite risks.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the warning covers cities including Omaha, Norfolk, and Council Bluffs, where exposed skin can freeze in just 10 minutes. Additional affected areas include Columbus, Fremont, and Wayne.

Residents are urged to take precautions, including dressing in multiple layers, wearing hats, gloves, and face masks, and limiting outdoor activities. Homeowners are also advised to prevent frozen pipes by wrapping them, allowing faucets to drip, or draining water systems.

The extreme conditions are the result of Arctic air combining with strong winds, creating life-threatening cold throughout the region. This level of cold can also strain heating systems and pose risks for the elderly, children, and pets.

The NWS emphasizes that these conditions will persist until midday Tuesday. Anyone venturing outdoors should take immediate precautions to avoid hypothermia and frostbite.
