Eureka, California – A moderate risk for dangerous sneaker waves is expected along the Northern California coast beginning Thursday evening, posing a serious hazard to anyone near beaches, rocks, or jetties.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, the sneaker wave risk will be in effect from 8 p.m. Thursday through 3 a.m. Friday, with large breakers of up to 17 feet expected to persist through the day on Friday. Forecasters warn that these waves can strike suddenly after long periods of smaller surf, catching beachgoers off guard and pulling them into frigid ocean water.

The threat extends along coastal areas accessible from U.S. Highway 101 and State Route 1, including beaches near Eureka, Arcata, Trinidad, Crescent City, and Fort Bragg. These routes provide direct access to coastal overlooks, parking areas, and trails where people may underestimate the danger due to calm-looking conditions.

The National Weather Service emphasizes that sneaker waves are especially dangerous because they do not follow a predictable pattern. A single larger wave can surge far beyond the normal waterline, overtaking people standing on dry sand or rocks. Victims are often knocked down and swept into the ocean with little chance to react.

Officials urge the public to stay well back from the shoreline, avoid climbing on rocks, jetties, or outcroppings, and never turn your back on the ocean. Those visiting beaches should keep children and pets close and remain alert at all times.

Cold water temperatures increase the risk of hypothermia within minutes if someone is swept into the surf. Rescue efforts can also be extremely dangerous for first responders under these conditions.

The sneaker wave risk is expected to gradually diminish later Friday, though large surf may continue.

Residents, travelers, photographers, and tourists accessing coastal areas from US-101 are urged to exercise extreme caution during the hazard period.
