Binghamton, New York – Drivers along Interstate 81 and State Route 17 are contending with pockets of dense morning fog that could cut visibility below one mile before 9 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, low clouds and fog developed overnight across central New York and the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. Conditions will gradually improve late this morning as drier air works in, allowing skies to partially clear by midafternoon.
Temperatures will rebound quickly once sunshine breaks through. Highs are expected to reach the upper 40s to low 50s across Broome, Tioga and Chemung counties. In Elmira and Towanda, readings may climb into the lower 50s, while Syracuse and Utica hold in the low to mid-40s under lingering clouds.
The foggy start could slow travel on I-81 between Binghamton and Scranton, as well as along I-86 near Elmira. Drivers should use low-beam headlights and increase following distance during the morning commute.
By late tonight, clouds will increase again with a chance of rain developing across northeast Pennsylvania and New York’s Southern Tier after midnight. Overnight lows will dip into the 20s and 30s, raising the possibility of patchy slick spots on untreated surfaces early Thursday.
Skies trend brighter this afternoon before the next round of unsettled weather approaches late tonight. Additional updates may be issued if rain coverage expands or fog redevelops overnight.
