Nixon, TX – An early morning earthquake struck south-central Texas, catching many residents off guard as they prepared for Election Day. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the magnitude 2.6 quake at 6:14 a.m. Tuesday, centered about 20 kilometers south of Nixon, roughly 55 miles southeast of San Antonio.

According to the USGS, the quake’s depth reached about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), making it relatively shallow and potentially more noticeable at the surface. The event prompted several residents to check in on social media, asking if others felt the brief tremor.

While a 2.6-magnitude earthquake is generally mild, even small quakes can rattle nerves, especially in regions unaccustomed to seismic activity. Officials have yet to report any damage or injuries from the incident.

Seismologists encourage residents to report their experiences online to help refine data and track potential aftershocks. Authorities remind Texans to stay aware of emergency procedures, as quakes can occur without warning.
