Carlsbad, New Mexico – A magnitude 3.7 earthquake struck just west-southwest of Carlsbad at 7:25 a.m. Monday, briefly shaking homes and rattling windows across parts of Eddy County during the early morning commute.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake hit about 20 kilometers (12 miles) WSW of Carlsbad at a depth of 7.5 kilometers, a range shallow enough to be felt near the surface. Initial reports show light shaking intensity, with no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Residents near Carlsbad, Loving, and areas along U.S. Route 62/180 may have felt a quick jolt lasting a few seconds. Light tremors like this can shift unsecured items and startle drivers, especially on rural roads and oil field routes common across southeast New Mexico.

Local emergency management officials advise residents to check for minor structural cracks, secure loose shelving, and report any damage. While earthquakes of this size rarely cause significant impacts, they can serve as reminders to review emergency plans and keep phones charged.

No aftershocks have been confirmed as of late Monday morning, but additional minor activity cannot be ruled out through the day.
