Roanoke, Virginia – Isolated severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across the eastern Piedmont of Virginia between 1 and 6 p.m. Saturday, bringing the threat of damaging wind gusts and small hail to cities including Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Danville.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the risk follows a morning of scattered showers and partial clearing, which will allow enough instability for storms to intensify as a cold front pushes through the region. Areas under the dark green shading on the storm outlook map face a marginal risk of severe weather today.

The primary hazards include localized wind damage and brief hail, especially along US Route 29 and Interstate 81 corridors. Residents in Bluefield, Wytheville, and Mount Airy should also stay alert for fast-developing storms this afternoon.

Officials advise staying weather-aware and knowing where to seek shelter if warnings are issued. Outdoor plans may need adjusting as conditions can change rapidly during peak heating hours.

Storms are expected to exit the area by early evening. Cooler, quieter weather returns Sunday, with frost possible west of the Blue Ridge by sunrise.
