Salisbury, MD – Snow and 45 mph wind gusts are sweeping across Maryland’s Eastern Shore and Virginia’s coastal counties early Monday, creating whiteout conditions that could shut down travel through 7 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect for Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset, Inland Worcester, and Maryland Beaches, along with Accomack and Northampton counties in Virginia. An additional 4 to 6 inches of snow is expected across much of the Maryland Eastern Shore, with up to 2 inches farther south in Accomack and Northampton. Winds will gust between 45 and 50 mph, reducing visibility and blowing snow across open roadways.
US-50 through Cambridge and Salisbury, Route 13 along the Delmarva Peninsula, and coastal routes near Ocean City and Chincoteague are vulnerable to drifting snow and sudden visibility drops. Officials warn the Monday morning and evening commutes will be especially hazardous.
Strong gusts could snap tree limbs and lead to scattered power outages, particularly in exposed coastal communities. Residents should secure loose outdoor items and charge electronic devices in case of service interruptions.
Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If driving is unavoidable, carry a winter survival kit and check Maryland and Virginia 511 systems for real-time road conditions.
Blizzard conditions are expected to continue through early evening, with additional advisories possible if winds remain elevated beyond sunset.
