Tulsa, Oklahoma – Parts of eastern Oklahoma face dangerous severe storms today, with hail up to 2 inches in diameter, torrential rain, and a heightened tornado risk expected through late tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, multiple waves of thunderstorms will move across the region through Wednesday evening, with the greatest threat window arriving late this afternoon into the overnight hours. Areas from McAlester to Fort Smith and Hugo are under an Enhanced Risk for severe storms, while a Flood Watch remains in effect for much of eastern Oklahoma through Thursday morning.

Wind gusts may reach 70 mph in some areas, with the most intense cells capable of producing quarter- to tennis ball-sized hail. Rainfall totals of 2 to 5 inches are expected widely, with locally higher amounts up to 7 inches possible—particularly in southeast Oklahoma and west-central Arkansas. Flash flooding and mainstem river flooding are both likely in flood-prone areas, especially near the Kiamichi and Poteau rivers.

Residents are urged to remain alert for tornado warnings, avoid low-lying roads, and have a shelter plan ready. Charge mobile devices and avoid non-essential travel during active warnings.

Severe weather remains likely into the night, and additional watches or warnings may be issued as storms intensify.
