Morehead City, N.C. – Heat index values are expected to soar above 100°F across eastern North Carolina today, with some areas potentially reaching as high as 105°F by mid-afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, temperatures in the 80s and low 90s combined with tropical dew points in the 70s will create hazardous heat conditions through the evening. Cities including Greenville (102°), New Bern (103°), and Jacksonville (100°) will experience the worst of it. The NWS urges residents to stay indoors when possible, take frequent breaks in shaded areas, and remain hydrated throughout the day.
Scattered strong thunderstorms are likely to develop this afternoon along the sea breeze, particularly near coastal counties such as Carteret and Onslow. These storms could bring gusty winds, lightning, and brief downpours. More intense heat is expected to follow on Wednesday.
Residents should check on vulnerable neighbors and never leave children or pets in vehicles. Wear light-colored, breathable clothing and use sunscreen if spending time outdoors.
Heat advisories may be extended or upgraded if conditions worsen, and updated guidance will be issued later today.
