Newport, NC – Residents in eastern North Carolina should prepare for increased rainfall beginning Monday night, with coastal areas experiencing the most impact. Rain could disrupt holiday plans, particularly Christmas Eve travel, as conditions may worsen by Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport, the chance of rain increases Monday night, with precipitation likely across much of the region through Tuesday. Areas along the coast, including Jacksonville, Morehead City, and Hatteras, could see rainfall totals exceeding one inch. Thunderstorms remain possible along the coastal regions, with a 10-20% chance.

Drivers along major routes like U.S. 17 and U.S. 70 are urged to stay alert for wet and slick road conditions, especially Tuesday. Rain is expected to ease by Tuesday night, with dry weather returning by Christmas Day. Temperatures on Monday will climb to 51°F during the day, with lows around 41°F, while Tuesday’s highs are expected to reach 55°F.

Looking ahead, Christmas Day will bring partly sunny skies and a high near 57°F, providing relief for holiday festivities. The dry stretch will extend into Thursday and Friday, with temperatures warming into the 60s by Friday.
