Greenville, N.C. – Parts of eastern North Carolina could see scattered thunderstorms and heavy rain by nightfall as a cold front slides south from Virginia, raising the threat of localized severe weather north of Highway 264.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, chances for rain and thunder will increase throughout Wednesday evening, with greatest impacts expected in Pitt, Beaufort, Martin, and Tyrrell counties. Areas such as Greenville, Plymouth, and Columbia face a 50% chance of rain, while Kill Devil Hills could also see storms continue into the overnight hours.

While most of the activity will stay north of Highway 264, isolated cells could become severe, with damaging winds or brief hail. Residents in New Bern, Morehead City, and Jacksonville will see lower rain chances, ranging from 10% to 30%, but should still stay weather-aware.

Motorists should use caution on wet roads late tonight and secure outdoor items ahead of potential gusts. It’s also wise to charge phones and review emergency plans in case of power outages or warnings.

More updates will follow if storms intensify; watches or advisories may be issued later today.
