Morehead City, N.C. – A soaking rain system is set to drench eastern North Carolina through Wednesday, bringing up to an inch of rainfall, scattered thunderstorms, and dangerous rip currents along the coast. The heaviest rain is expected to fall overnight into Wednesday morning, especially near the southern coast and east of Highway 17.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, a low pressure system moving in this evening will trigger widespread showers and elevate the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas. While thunderstorms are possible, most are expected to remain below severe levels.

Communities from Jacksonville to New Bern and up toward Greenville may see steady rainfall totals over an inch by mid-afternoon Wednesday. Coastal towns including Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle face a high risk of rip currents today, prompting safety warnings for beachgoers.

Residents should avoid non-essential travel during overnight downpours and secure outdoor belongings. If visiting the coast, stay out of the surf and heed local beach advisories.

This wet pattern may linger beyond Wednesday, and additional alerts could be issued as conditions evolve.
