Albany, NY – Light snow is creating slippery road conditions across eastern New York this Christmas Eve, potentially impacting holiday travel plans. Major highways, including I-87 and I-90, are expected to see challenging conditions through mid-morning as snow continues to accumulate.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, snowfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are forecast, with higher totals possible in localized areas. Temperatures remain cold, hovering in the mid-20s, which could lead to icy patches even as snowfall begins to taper off this afternoon. Drivers are urged to reduce speeds, leave extra space between vehicles, and allow additional time for braking.

The forecast for Christmas Day promises calmer conditions, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 27 degrees. Winds will remain light, but temperatures will dip into the teens overnight. For those traveling later this week, expect mostly sunny skies through Thursday, with highs around 30 degrees.

Looking ahead to the weekend, a warming trend brings highs near 40 by Sunday, though a chance of rain could return to the area. Snow from earlier in the week may melt, creating potential for slippery spots on untreated surfaces during overnight freezes.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and prepare vehicles with emergency kits, including blankets, flashlights, and extra food and water. For updates on travel conditions, check road status reports before heading out.
